Clown Knifefish (Chitala ornata)

The Clown Knifefish is an impressive freshwater predator known for its long, blade-shaped body, shimmering silver coloration, and distinctive series of dark eye-like spots along its lower sides. Its unusual body shape and graceful, wave-like swimming motion make it one of the most recognizable monster fish in the aquarium hobby. Because of its enormous adult size, this species is best suited for experienced aquarists with very large aquariums.

Native to rivers, lakes, floodplains, and other freshwater habitats of Southeast Asia, Chitala ornata spends much of its time around submerged vegetation, roots, and other sheltered areas. In the aquarium, juveniles appreciate caves, driftwood, and shaded areas, while adults require substantial open swimming space. Powerful filtration and excellent water quality are essential due to the amount of waste produced by a large predatory fish.

Clown Knifefish are primarily nocturnal and may initially spend much of the day hiding. Once comfortable, they often become more visible and can learn to recognize feeding routines and the people caring for them. Their long anal fin allows them to move smoothly forward and backward through the water.

This species is carnivorous and should receive a varied diet of quality meaty foods. Shrimp, krill, earthworms, mussels, pieces of fish, and quality carnivore pellets can all be offered. Feeder fish are unnecessary and may introduce parasites or disease into the aquarium.

Although not constantly aggressive, Clown Knifefish are powerful predators with very large mouths. Small and medium-sized fish may eventually be eaten. Tank mates should be large, robust species that cannot fit into the Knifefish's mouth and are not excessively aggressive. Even with appropriate companions, plenty of space is essential.
