Christmas Moss on Clay is a convenient, ready-to-place aquatic plant featuring lush Christmas Moss already established on a clay base. Named for its distinctive branching growth that resembles the layered shape of a Christmas tree, this popular freshwater moss creates a dense, natural appearance while providing valuable cover and grazing surfaces throughout the aquarium.
The attached clay base makes placement simple and helps keep the moss securely positioned without the need for glue, thread, or additional anchoring. It can be placed directly on the substrate or incorporated around rocks, driftwood, and other aquascaping features. Over time, the moss develops thicker branching growth and can be trimmed to maintain a compact shape or allowed to spread for a more natural appearance.
Christmas Moss performs well under low to moderate lighting, although moderate lighting generally encourages denser and more compact growth. Supplemental CO₂ is not required, making it suitable for low-tech planted aquariums, but CO₂ and balanced fertilization can promote faster, fuller growth.
This moss is particularly useful in shrimp and breeding aquariums. Its fine branching structure provides an excellent surface for biofilm and microorganisms to develop, creating natural grazing areas for shrimp and shelter for newborn shrimplets and fish fry.
Regular trimming helps maintain its attractive branching pattern and prevents the inner portions from becoming shaded or collecting excessive debris. Gentle water circulation around the moss can also help keep it clean and healthy.
Care Level: Easy | Plant Type: Aquatic Moss | Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate | Lighting: Low to Moderate | CO₂: Not Required, but Beneficial | Temperature: 68–78°F | Origin: Asia
If you're looking for an easy way to add established moss to your freshwater aquarium, Christmas Moss on Clay is an excellent choice. Its convenient weighted base, attractive branching growth, and excellent benefits for shrimp and fry make it a versatile addition to planted tanks, nano aquariums, and natural-style aquascapes.
