Chocolate Gourami (Sphaerichthys osphromenoides)

The Chocolate Gourami is a beautiful and unusual freshwater fish prized for its rich chocolate-brown coloration, delicate cream-colored vertical bands, and graceful swimming behavior. Its subtle beauty and peaceful personality make it especially appealing to experienced aquarists looking to create a soft-water planted or blackwater aquarium.

Native to the slow-moving blackwater swamps and forest streams of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia, Sphaerichthys osphromenoides naturally inhabits extremely soft, acidic water stained dark by tannins from decaying leaves and wood. In the aquarium, it does best in a mature, stable setup with subdued lighting, gentle filtration, driftwood, leaf litter, live plants, and floating vegetation.

Chocolate Gouramis are more sensitive to water quality than many commonly kept gouramis. They prefer warm, soft, acidic water and can struggle when exposed to rapidly changing parameters or elevated waste levels. Regular maintenance and stable conditions are essential, making this species better suited for experienced aquarists.

Chocolate Gouramis are primarily carnivorous micropredators. They should receive a varied diet of small foods such as frozen or live baby brine shrimp, daphnia, Cyclops, mosquito larvae, and appropriately sized bloodworms. Some individuals may initially refuse dry foods, so frozen and live foods can be particularly important when acclimating new fish.

This species is peaceful and generally does best with other calm fish that appreciate similar soft-water conditions. Small Rasboras, peaceful Tetras, Kuhli Loaches, and other gentle Southeast Asian species can make suitable companions. Aggressive, highly active, or competitive feeders should be avoided.
