Canary Blenny (Meiacanthus oualanensis)
The Canary Blenny is a vibrant and charismatic reef fish that brings brilliant yellow coloration and endless personality to marine aquariums. Its slender, streamlined body is covered in a vivid canary-yellow hue that stands out beautifully against live rock and colorful corals. Constantly perched on rockwork or darting through the water column, this active blenny is an entertaining and eye-catching addition to any reef aquarium.
Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Canary Blenny inhabits coral-rich lagoons and reef slopes where it spends its time searching for plankton and small crustaceans. Unlike many blennies that primarily graze on algae, the Canary Blenny is a planktivore, frequently swimming in open water before returning to its favorite perch. Its curious behavior and active lifestyle make it a favorite among reef hobbyists.
One of the most fascinating features of the Canary Blenny is its built-in defense mechanism. As a member of the fang blenny family, it possesses small venomous fangs used strictly for defense against predators. While completely peaceful toward most tank mates, this adaptation helps protect the fish in the wild and is rarely an issue in the home aquarium.
The Canary Blenny thrives in mature reef aquariums with plenty of live rock, hiding places, and open swimming space. It is completely reef safe and readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets. A secure lid is recommended, as this species can jump if startled.
