Asian Bumblebee Catfish (Pseudomystus siamensis)

The Asian Bumblebee Catfish is a striking freshwater species admired for its bold black-and-yellow banding, nocturnal habits, and secretive personality. Its bee-like coloration provides excellent camouflage among driftwood and rocks while making it one of the most visually distinctive catfish in the aquarium hobby. Hardy and relatively easy to care for, this fascinating bottom-dweller is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a unique predator to a peaceful semi-aggressive community aquarium.

Native to rivers and streams throughout Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and neighboring regions of Southeast Asia, the Asian Bumblebee Catfish inhabits slow-moving waters with submerged wood, rocks, and dense vegetation. In the aquarium, it thrives in setups with caves, driftwood, smooth rocks, and dimly lit hiding places where it can rest during the day before becoming more active after lights out. Fine sand or smooth gravel is recommended to protect its sensitive barbels.

Asian Bumblebee Catfish are carnivores that eagerly accept sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, blackworms, chopped earthworms, and other meaty foods. While juveniles may occasionally eat prepared foods during the day, they typically become more nocturnal as they mature. Feeding after the aquarium lights are off helps ensure they receive adequate nutrition.

Although generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish, the Asian Bumblebee Catfish is an opportunistic predator and may consume very small fish or shrimp that can fit into its mouth. Ideal tank mates include larger tetras, rainbowfish, gouramis, barbs, peaceful cichlids, and other medium-sized community fish. Providing plenty of hiding places helps reduce stress and encourages natural behavior.
