Bolivian Ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus)

The Bolivian Ram is a peaceful and beautifully patterned dwarf cichlid that has become a favorite among freshwater aquarists for its gentle temperament, hardiness, and engaging personality. Displaying a stunning blend of golden tan, silver, iridescent blue, and soft orange highlights, along with elongated dorsal fin rays and expressive red eyes, the Bolivian Ram adds elegance and activity to planted community aquariums.

Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of Bolivia and Brazil in the upper Rio Madeira Basin, Bolivian Rams inhabit sandy-bottom streams with scattered driftwood, rocks, and aquatic vegetation. In the aquarium, they spend much of their time exploring the substrate, sifting through sand in search of food, and interacting with tank mates. Their curious nature and peaceful disposition make them enjoyable fish to observe.

Bolivian Rams thrive in mature aquariums with soft sand, driftwood, rocks, and plenty of plants to provide cover. They appreciate stable water conditions, gentle filtration, and open areas for swimming. As omnivores, they readily accept high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia, and other prepared foods. A varied diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration and supports long-term health.

One of the most peaceful dwarf cichlids available, Bolivian Rams are excellent additions to community aquariums with tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, peaceful gouramis, pencilfish, and other non-aggressive species. While they may become mildly territorial during breeding, they rarely exhibit the aggression associated with larger cichlids.
