Blue Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus)

The Blue Tang is one of the most recognizable and beloved marine fish in the world, admired for its brilliant royal blue body, bold black markings, and vibrant yellow tail. Famous for its graceful swimming and active personality, the Blue Tang is a stunning centerpiece for large saltwater aquariums. With proper care and plenty of swimming space, this intelligent and long-lived surgeonfish becomes a spectacular addition to established reef and fish-only systems.

Native to coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, Blue Tangs spend their days cruising open reef faces and lagoons while grazing on algae growing across rocks and coral structures. In the home aquarium, they thrive in mature systems with abundant live rock, excellent water quality, and plenty of open swimming room. Due to their active nature and adult size, they require spacious aquariums and stable water parameters to remain healthy.

Blue Tangs are primarily herbivores and should receive a diet rich in marine algae, dried seaweed (nori), spirulina-based foods, and herbivore pellets. Supplementing their diet with mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other high-quality frozen foods provides additional nutrition and helps support a strong immune system and vibrant coloration.

Generally peaceful, Blue Tangs do well with a wide variety of reef-safe fish, including clownfish, gobies, wrasses, blennies, anthias, and dwarf angelfish. They may become territorial toward other tangs, especially those with similar body shapes, unless housed in very large aquariums. They are considered reef safe and can be successfully kept with corals and most reef invertebrates.
