Pearly Jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons)
The Pearly Jawfish is a fascinating marine fish known for its shimmering white to pale blue body covered in iridescent spots, expressive eyes, and unique burrowing behavior. Unlike most reef fish, the Pearly Jawfish spends much of its day peeking out from a carefully constructed burrow, retreating underground when startled and emerging to hover just above its home in search of food. Its engaging personality and unusual habits make it a favorite among saltwater hobbyists looking for something truly different.
Native to the Caribbean and western Atlantic, Pearly Jawfish inhabit sandy reef flats and rubble zones where they excavate elaborate burrows using shells, coral rubble, and small rocks. In the home aquarium, they require a deep sand bed of at least 3–4 inches along with pieces of rubble to build and reinforce their burrow. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as this species is an excellent jumper, especially when first introduced or startled.
Pearly Jawfish are peaceful carnivores that readily accept a variety of frozen and prepared foods, including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets. Feeding small portions multiple times per day helps support their active metabolism and natural feeding behavior.
Their gentle temperament makes them excellent tank mates for peaceful reef fish such as clownfish, gobies, firefish, cardinalfish, blennies, and fairy wrasses. They are considered reef safe and coexist well with corals and most reef invertebrates. Avoid housing them with aggressive fish or species that may compete for burrowing space.
