Blue-Eyed Lampeye Killifish (Procatopus nototaenia)

The Blue-Eyed Lampeye Killifish is a striking freshwater nano fish admired for its shimmering silver-green body, brilliant electric blue eyes, and graceful schooling behavior. Its glowing eyes catch the light from every angle, creating a dazzling display as a group swims through a planted aquarium. Peaceful, active, and relatively hardy, this beautiful African species is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add elegance and movement to a community aquarium.

Native to the forest streams and slow-moving rivers of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea in Central Africa, Procatopus nototaenia inhabits clear, well-oxygenated waters with abundant vegetation. In the aquarium, they thrive in planted tanks with gentle water flow, floating plants, driftwood, and open swimming areas. They are highly social fish and should always be kept in schools of at least six to eight individuals, with larger groups displaying their most natural behavior and best coloration.

Blue-Eyed Lampeye Killifish are omnivores that readily accept high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, Cyclops, microworms, and other small live or frozen foods. A varied diet helps maintain their vibrant colors, glowing eyes, and overall health.

Their peaceful temperament makes them ideal companions for other nano species such as Ember Tetras, Chili Rasboras, Celestial Pearl Danios, Pygmy Corydoras, Otocinclus, freshwater shrimp, and other gentle community fish. Their active midwater swimming and reflective eyes create a beautiful contrast in heavily planted aquariums.
