The Blue Eye Bushynose Pleco is a striking freshwater pleco prized for its distinctive blue-toned eyes and characteristic facial bristles. Mature males develop prominent tentacle-like bristles across the snout and head, while females typically have fewer and shorter bristles. Its manageable 4–5 inch adult size makes it an excellent alternative to many larger pleco species.
These plecos thrive in well-established aquariums with plenty of hiding places and natural surfaces for grazing. Driftwood, caves, rocks, and live plants create an ideal environment. Driftwood is especially beneficial—these plecos naturally spend considerable time rasping and grazing on wood, biofilm, and algae-covered surfaces.
Although excellent grazers, they should not be expected to survive on aquarium algae alone. Supplement their diet with quality algae wafers, sinking herbivore foods, and vegetables such as zucchini, squash, and green beans. Occasional protein-rich foods can be offered in moderation.
Bushynose Plecos are generally peaceful and work well in freshwater community aquariums. Adults may become territorial toward other bottom-dwelling plecos around caves, so providing multiple hiding places is recommended when keeping more than one. This species is also popular for its interesting breeding behavior—males select and defend caves while guarding and fanning eggs until they hatch.
Scientific Name: *Ancistrus* sp. | Care Level: Easy | Temperament: Peaceful | Adult Size: 4–5 Inches | Minimum Tank Size: 20 Gallons | Temperature: 72–80°F | Origin: Captive-Bred
Perfect for planted tanks and freshwater community aquariums, the Blue Eye Bushynose Pleco combines distinctive appearance, fascinating behavior, and excellent grazing habits in a compact, manageable package.
