Blue Diamond Discus (Symphysodon spp.)
The Blue Diamond Discus is a breathtaking selectively bred discus variety prized for its brilliant, nearly solid turquoise to electric-blue coloration. Unlike many patterned discus varieties, Blue Diamonds are known for their clean, uniform appearance with little to no vertical barring or body pattern. Blue Diamond Discus originate from captive-bred strains of South American Symphysodon. Like other discus, they thrive in warm, clean, stable water with excellent filtration and consistent aquarium maintenance. They appreciate spacious aquariums with open swimming areas, driftwood, and live plants capable of tolerating warmer temperatures. Because discus are social cichlids, they are generally best maintained in groups of five or more unless keeping an established breeding pair.
Blue Diamond Discus are omnivores and should receive a varied, high-quality diet. Premium discus pellets and granules can be supplemented with frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and other nutritious frozen or prepared foods. Juveniles benefit from several smaller feedings throughout the day to support proper growth and development.
Despite being cichlids, discus are generally peaceful and do best with calm tank mates that tolerate their warmer water requirements. Excellent companions include Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Sterbai Corydoras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, and other gentle species. Aggressive or extremely active fish should be avoided because they can stress discus and outcompete them during feeding.
