Bleeding Heart Tetra (Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma)

The Bleeding Heart Tetra is one of the most elegant and recognizable freshwater schooling fish in the aquarium hobby. Named for the distinctive red "heart-shaped" spot located just behind its gills, this beautiful species features a shimmering silver body with subtle pink hues and graceful flowing fins. Peaceful, hardy, and full of personality, the Bleeding Heart Tetra makes a stunning addition to planted aquariums and larger community tanks.

Native to the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of the upper Amazon Basin in Peru and Colombia, Bleeding Heart Tetras inhabit blackwater and clearwater environments with abundant vegetation, driftwood, and leaf litter. In the aquarium, they thrive in planted setups with subdued lighting, gentle water flow, and open swimming space. As a highly social species, they should be kept in schools of at least six individuals, though groups of eight or more allow them to display their most natural schooling behavior and vibrant coloration.

Bleeding Heart Tetras are omnivores and readily accept high-quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, Cyclops, and other live or frozen foods. A varied diet helps maintain their brilliant coloration, healthy fins, and overall vitality.

Their peaceful temperament makes them excellent tank mates for Corydoras, Angelfish, German Blue Rams, Apistogramma, peaceful gouramis, rasboras, rainbowfish, and other non-aggressive community fish. Their calm nature and elegant swimming style make them especially attractive in well-planted South American aquariums.
