Black Skirt Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi)

The Black Skirt Tetra is a hardy and attractive freshwater schooling fish known for its shimmering silver body, bold black vertical bands, and flowing black dorsal and anal fins that give it its distinctive "skirt" appearance. Easy to care for and full of personality, this classic community fish has remained a favorite among aquarists for generations. Their active schooling behavior and striking coloration make them an excellent addition to planted and community aquariums.

Native to the rivers and tributaries of Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil, Black Skirt Tetras inhabit slow-moving waters filled with aquatic vegetation and submerged wood. In the aquarium, they thrive in well-planted tanks with open swimming areas, driftwood, and subdued lighting that helps accentuate their natural coloration. They are highly social fish and should always be kept in schools of at least six individuals, with larger groups displaying more natural behavior and reducing occasional fin-nipping.

Black Skirt Tetras are omnivores and readily accept high-quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and other live or frozen foods. A varied diet promotes healthy growth, vibrant coloration, and overall vitality.

Although generally peaceful, Black Skirt Tetras can occasionally nip the fins of slow-moving or long-finned fish if kept in groups that are too small. They make excellent tank mates for Corydoras, rasboras, rainbowfish, danios, gouramis, larger tetras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. Avoid pairing them with delicate long-finned species such as Bettas or fancy guppies in smaller aquariums.
