Black Nasty Cichlid (Nandopsis haitiensis)
The Black Nasty Cichlid is one of the most impressive and sought-after Central American cichlids, admired for its dramatic color transformation and commanding personality. Juveniles display attractive barred patterns, while mature males develop an intense jet-black body accented by iridescent blue highlights and a pronounced nuchal hump. Large, intelligent, and highly interactive, the Black Nasty Cichlid is a true showpiece for experienced aquarists with spacious aquariums.
Native to the rivers, lakes, and reservoirs of Haiti and the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola, the Black Nasty inhabits rocky shorelines and areas with submerged wood. In the aquarium, they thrive in large setups with excellent filtration, open swimming space, sturdy rockwork, and driftwood. Because they enjoy digging and rearranging their surroundings, decorations should be securely positioned, and hardy plants are recommended if live plants are used.
Black Nasty Cichlids are omnivores with a preference for protein-rich foods. They readily accept high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen krill, shrimp, earthworms, bloodworms, and other meaty foods, along with occasional vegetable-based supplements. A varied diet and pristine water quality help maintain their health, coloration, and overall condition.
As their name suggests, Black Nasty Cichlids can become highly territorial, particularly mature males. They are best kept singly or with other large, equally robust Central or South American cichlids in very spacious aquariums. Suitable tank mates may include large Vieja species, Oscars, Jaguars, large catfish, and other powerful fish that can hold their own. Careful planning and plenty of territory are essential for long-term success.
