Black Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

The Black Angelfish is a striking freshwater cichlid prized for its rich jet-black coloration, elegant body shape, and graceful, flowing fins. Its bold, velvety appearance creates a dramatic contrast against lush green plants and natural driftwood, making it a stunning centerpiece for planted aquariums and South American community tanks. Intelligent and full of personality, Black Angelfish quickly recognize their owners and become an engaging addition to any aquarium.

Derived from the wild South American Angelfish, the Black Angelfish retains the calm demeanor and graceful swimming style that have made angelfish one of the most popular freshwater species in the hobby. They thrive in tall aquariums with plenty of vertical swimming space, driftwood, broad-leaf plants, and open areas to explore. Their elegant fins and slow, deliberate movements create a captivating display.

Black Angelfish are omnivores and readily accept a varied diet of high-quality angelfish pellets, tropical flakes, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other protein-rich foods. A balanced diet helps maintain their health, coloration, and finnage. They prefer clean, warm water with stable water parameters and benefit from regular maintenance.

While generally peaceful, Black Angelfish may become territorial during breeding and can prey on very small fish or shrimp that fit into their mouths. They are best kept with similarly sized peaceful tank mates such as larger tetras, Corydoras, peaceful gouramis, rainbowfish, and other compatible South American species.
