Black & White Heniochus (Heniochus acuminatus)
The Black & White Heniochus is an elegant marine fish admired for its bold black-and-white bands, elongated dorsal streamer, and graceful swimming style. Often referred to as the "Bannerfish," this striking species is frequently mistaken for the Moorish Idol but is considerably hardier and better suited for home aquariums. Its active nature and dramatic appearance make it a stunning centerpiece for large saltwater fish-only and select reef aquariums.
Native to the reefs and lagoons of the Indo-Pacific, the Black & White Heniochus inhabits coral-rich environments where it cruises through open water in pairs or small groups. In the aquarium, it thrives in spacious systems with plenty of open swimming room, live rock, and caves for shelter. Excellent water quality and strong water movement help this active swimmer remain healthy and display its best coloration.
Black & White Heniochus are omnivores that readily accept a varied diet of high-quality marine flakes, pellets, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and foods containing sponge and marine algae. Frequent, varied feedings help maintain their health, vibrant coloration, and long dorsal streamer.
These fish are generally peaceful and make excellent companions for tangs, angelfish, wrasses, triggerfish, rabbitfish, and other similarly sized marine species. While they are considered reef safe with caution, some individuals may nip at soft corals, large polyp stony corals, zoanthids, feather dusters, or clam mantles. They are best suited for fish-only systems or carefully monitored mixed reef aquariums.
