Bicolor Blenny (Ecsenius bicolor)
The Bicolor Blenny is a charming and personality-filled saltwater fish recognized for its distinctive two-tone coloration, with a rich chocolate-brown front half that transitions into a vibrant orange-yellow rear. Curious, active, and full of character, this small blenny spends its day perched on rocks, darting between crevices, and grazing on algae. Its entertaining behavior and natural algae-eating habits make it a favorite addition to reef aquariums.
Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Bicolor Blenny inhabits shallow reef slopes and lagoons where it lives among live rock and coral formations. In the home aquarium, it thrives in mature systems with abundant live rock, plenty of hiding places, and established algae growth for grazing. Despite its active nature, the Bicolor Blenny remains relatively small and is well suited for nano and medium-sized reef aquariums.
Bicolor Blennies are primarily herbivores, spending much of their day grazing on filamentous algae and biofilm. They should be offered a varied diet that includes spirulina-based foods, marine algae, dried nori, herbivore pellets, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or enriched brine shrimp. A mature aquarium with natural algae growth helps support their nutritional needs and natural behavior.
Generally peaceful, the Bicolor Blenny gets along well with clownfish, gobies, cardinalfish, wrasses, firefish, and other reef-safe species. They may show territorial behavior toward other blennies or fish with a similar body shape, especially in smaller aquariums. They are considered reef safe, though on rare occasions an individual may nip at clam mantles or fleshy large polyp stony corals if underfed.
