Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni)
The Banggai Cardinalfish is a striking and elegant saltwater fish known for its silver body, bold black vertical bands, elongated fins, and brilliant white spots. Its dramatic pattern and graceful swimming behavior make it one of the most recognizable cardinalfish in the marine aquarium hobby. Peaceful, relatively hardy, and well suited for reef systems, the Banggai Cardinalfish is an excellent choice for both newer and experienced saltwater aquarists.
Native to the Banggai Islands of Indonesia, Pterapogon kauderni naturally inhabits shallow coastal environments, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and areas surrounding long-spined sea urchins. Unlike many cardinalfish that are primarily nocturnal, Banggai Cardinalfish are frequently active and visible throughout the day. In the aquarium, they appreciate live rock, caves, and sheltered areas combined with plenty of open swimming space.
Banggai Cardinalfish are carnivores and should be offered a varied diet of appropriately sized meaty marine foods. Mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped krill, copepods, and quality marine pellets are excellent choices. Newly introduced specimens may initially prefer frozen or live foods before transitioning to prepared diets.
This species is generally peaceful toward other marine fish but can become territorial toward other Banggai Cardinalfish, particularly as individuals mature and pairs form. They can be maintained as compatible pairs, while keeping larger groups typically requires significantly more space and careful observation.
Banggai Cardinalfish are considered reef safe and normally leave corals, clams, and other desirable reef inhabitants unharmed. Their calm swimming behavior makes them especially suitable for peaceful reef community aquariums.
