Bala Shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus)
The Bala Shark is a large, active freshwater fish known for its sleek silver body, deeply forked tail, and bold black-edged fins. Despite its common name and shark-like appearance, the Bala Shark is not a true shark. It is actually a member of the carp and minnow family. Its peaceful personality, impressive size, and constant swimming activity make it a striking addition to very large freshwater aquariums.
Native to rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia, Balantiocheilos melanopterus naturally inhabits spacious, well-oxygenated waterways. In the aquarium, Bala Sharks require excellent filtration, clean water, strong oxygenation, and substantial open swimming space. Their eventual adult size should be carefully considered before purchasing juveniles, as these small silver fish can grow into very large and powerful swimmers.
Bala Sharks are social fish and should ideally be maintained in groups of at least five individuals. Keeping a proper group helps encourage natural behavior and reduces stress. Because a group of adult Bala Sharks requires an enormous amount of swimming space, they are best suited for very large aquariums.
Bala Sharks are omnivores and readily accept a wide variety of foods. Quality pellets and flakes can form the foundation of their diet and should be supplemented with spirulina-based foods, vegetables, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized frozen or prepared foods.
Although generally peaceful, adult Bala Sharks may unintentionally intimidate much smaller or slower fish simply because of their size and activity level. Suitable tank mates include larger Barbs, Rainbowfish, Silver Dollars, peaceful Cichlids, large Catfish, and other robust community species. Very small fish may eventually be viewed as food.
A tightly fitted aquarium lid is essential. Bala Sharks are extremely powerful jumpers and can leap from the aquarium when startled.
