Baby Tears Aquatic Plant (Micranthemum micranthemoides)
Baby Tears is a delicate and versatile aquatic plant prized for its tiny, bright green leaves and lush, compact growth. Its fine texture and vibrant color make it a favorite among aquascapers, whether used as a dense foreground carpet, a low-growing midground accent, or a carefully trimmed background bush. With proper care, Baby Tears creates a soft, natural appearance that enhances the beauty and depth of any planted aquarium.
Native to the southeastern United States, Micranthemum micranthemoides naturally grows in shallow streams, ponds, and wetlands. In the aquarium, it thrives in nutrient-rich environments with stable water conditions. Moderate to high lighting encourages compact, bushy growth, while supplemental CO₂ and regular fertilization help produce dense carpets and vibrant green foliage.
Baby Tears is a moderate to fast-growing stem plant that responds well to regular trimming. Frequent pruning encourages fuller growth and allows cuttings to be replanted to create thicker groupings throughout the aquarium. Its versatility makes it suitable for Nature Aquariums, Dutch-style layouts, and nano aquascapes alike.
This plant pairs beautifully with carpeting species, Cryptocorynes, Anubias, Bucephalandra, Rotala, Ludwigia, and other stem plants. It also provides excellent cover for shrimp, fry, and other small aquarium inhabitants.
