Male Guppies (Poecilia reticulata)

Male Guppies are among the most colorful and popular freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Selectively bred into an incredible variety of colors and patterns, males can display brilliant shades of blue, red, orange, yellow, green, purple, and metallic tones. Their elaborate tails and constant activity create an impressive display, especially when several different varieties are kept together.

Native through their wild lineage to freshwater habitats of northeastern South America and parts of the Caribbean, most Guppies available in the aquarium hobby today are captive bred. They are highly adaptable and thrive in established aquariums with clean water, gentle to moderate filtration, open swimming areas, and plenty of live plants.

Male Guppies are peaceful, social fish that can be kept in groups. An all-male Guppy aquarium is an excellent option for aquarists who want plenty of color without the constant reproduction associated with keeping males and females together. Males may occasionally display or chase one another, but this behavior is generally harmless when adequate space and cover are provided.

Guppies are omnivores and readily accept a wide variety of foods. High-quality tropical flakes or small pellets can be supplemented with spirulina-based foods, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized frozen or live foods. A varied diet helps maintain strong coloration, healthy growth, and beautiful finnage.

Their peaceful nature makes Male Guppies excellent companions for many community fish, including Corydoras, Rasboras, peaceful Tetras, small Rainbowfish, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid large predatory fish and aggressive fin-nippers that may damage their colorful tails.
