Female Guppies (Poecilia reticulata)
Female Guppies are hardy, peaceful, and active freshwater fish that make an excellent addition to community and planted aquariums. Compared with males, females typically have larger, fuller bodies with shorter fins and more subtle coloration, although selectively bred females can still display beautiful colors and patterns throughout the body and tail.
Native through their wild lineage to northeastern South America and parts of the Caribbean, most Guppies available in the aquarium hobby today are captive bred. Female Guppies are highly adaptable and thrive in established aquariums with clean water, gentle to moderate filtration, open swimming areas, and plenty of live plants for shelter.
Guppies are livebearers, meaning females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. When males and females are kept together, breeding is extremely likely. Female Guppies can also store sperm and may produce multiple batches of fry after being separated from males. When keeping both sexes together, a ratio of approximately one male to two or three females helps reduce excessive attention toward individual females.
Female Guppies are omnivores and readily accept a wide variety of aquarium foods. High-quality tropical flakes or small pellets can be supplemented with spirulina-based foods, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized frozen or live foods. A varied diet is especially important for females that are actively reproducing.
Their peaceful temperament makes Female Guppies excellent companions for Corydoras, Rasboras, peaceful Tetras, small Rainbowfish, other livebearers, and many other non-aggressive community species. Large predatory fish and aggressive fin-nippers should be avoided.
