Apistogramma macmasteri "Red Neck" Gold Form (Apistogramma macmasteri)
The Apistogramma macmasteri "Red Neck" Gold Form is a spectacular selectively bred dwarf cichlid prized for its brilliant golden-yellow body, intense red coloration around the throat and neck, and vibrant red-orange finnage. Iridescent blue highlights and intricate markings add even more contrast, particularly in mature males. Combining exceptional coloration with the personality and fascinating behavior Apistogrammas are known for, this variety makes an outstanding centerpiece for planted freshwater aquariums.
The wild form of Apistogramma macmasteri originates from slow-moving streams and tributaries of Colombia, where these fish inhabit areas filled with leaf litter, submerged roots, driftwood, and vegetation. The Red Neck Gold Form is a captive-bred color variety but benefits from a similar aquarium environment. A soft sand substrate, driftwood, plants, caves, and plenty of sheltered areas help the fish feel secure and encourage natural behavior.
Apistogramma macmasteri are omnivores with a strong preference for small, protein-rich foods. High-quality micro pellets can be supplemented with frozen or live baby brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, blackworms, and similar foods. A varied diet helps maintain the intense gold and red coloration for which this variety is prized.
Although generally peaceful, males can become territorial toward other dwarf cichlids, and females may become particularly protective when guarding eggs or fry. They do well with peaceful community species such as small tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, Corydoras, Otocinclus, and other non-aggressive fish. Providing multiple caves and visual barriers is especially important when keeping a pair or multiple Apistogrammas.
