Blue Apistogramma (Apistogramma borellii)

The Blue Apistogramma is a stunning dwarf cichlid admired for its iridescent blue body, brilliant yellow highlights, and graceful finnage. Also known as Borell's Dwarf Cichlid or the Umbrella Cichlid, this peaceful South American species is one of the gentlest members of the Apistogramma genus. Its vibrant colors, fascinating behavior, and manageable size make it an excellent centerpiece for planted aquariums and peaceful community setups.

Native to the slow-moving streams, ponds, and flooded grasslands of Paraguay, southern Brazil, and northern Argentina, Apistogramma borellii inhabits shallow waters rich in leaf litter, driftwood, and aquatic vegetation. In the aquarium, it thrives in well-planted tanks with caves, coconut huts, driftwood, and plenty of hiding places. A soft sand substrate allows the fish to display natural foraging behavior while creating an authentic South American environment.

Blue Apistogrammas are omnivores that readily accept high-quality micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, blackworms, and other small live or frozen foods. A varied, protein-rich diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration and encourages breeding behavior.

Their peaceful temperament makes them ideal companions for small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, otocinclus, and other gentle community species. While they may become mildly territorial during spawning, they are significantly less aggressive than many other dwarf cichlids and are well suited to peaceful planted aquariums.
