Albino Marble Hoplo Catfish (Megalechis thoracata)
The Albino Marble Hoplo Catfish is a fascinating freshwater catfish prized for its pale cream-to-white coloration, subtle marbled patterning, and active, personable behavior. This selectively bred form of the popular Hoplo Catfish combines an unusual albino appearance with the hardy nature and entertaining personality that make Hoplos excellent additions to larger community aquariums.
Native through its wild lineage to rivers, streams, floodplains, and wetlands of South America, the Albino Marble Hoplo is a captive-bred ornamental variety. In the aquarium, it appreciates a soft sand or smooth gravel substrate with driftwood, caves, plants, and shaded areas for resting. These catfish are active explorers and should also be provided with plenty of open bottom space for foraging.
Hoplo Catfish are social and can be kept individually, but they often display more natural behavior when maintained with others of their own kind. They are generally peaceful and robust enough to live alongside a wide variety of medium-sized community fish.
Albino Marble Hoplo Catfish are omnivores with hearty appetites. Quality sinking catfish pellets and wafers should form the foundation of their diet and can be supplemented with frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, earthworms, and other appropriately sized foods. They should receive dedicated feedings rather than being expected to survive on leftovers from other fish.
Their peaceful temperament makes them excellent companions for larger Tetras, Rainbowfish, peaceful Barbs, Gouramis, Angelfish, Severums, Geophagus, and other non-aggressive to moderately robust community species. Very small fish and tiny shrimp should be considered with caution around mature specimens.
