Hector's Goby (Koumansetta hectori)

Hector's Goby is a peaceful and beautifully patterned reef fish admired for its slender body, golden-yellow coloration, and distinctive horizontal blue stripes accented by a black spot near the tail. Small, active, and full of personality, this goby spends much of its day gliding across the substrate and live rock while grazing on algae and searching for tiny organisms. Its gentle nature and unique appearance make it an excellent addition to mature reef aquariums.

Native to the coral reefs and sandy lagoons of the Indo-Pacific, Hector's Goby inhabits areas with fine sand, rubble, and abundant live rock. In the home aquarium, it thrives in established reef systems with mature live rock, a sandy substrate, and plenty of hiding places. It appreciates peaceful surroundings where it can forage naturally throughout the day without competition from aggressive tank mates.

Hector's Goby is an omnivore that naturally feeds on microalgae, detritus, and tiny benthic invertebrates. It should be offered a varied diet of finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, frozen Cyclops, high-quality marine pellets, and algae-based foods. Mature aquariums with healthy populations of microfauna help support their long-term success.

These gobies are exceptionally peaceful and pair well with clownfish, blennies, firefish, cardinalfish, fairy wrasses, small tangs, and other non-aggressive reef fish. They are completely reef safe and coexist peacefully with corals, ornamental shrimp, snails, and other invertebrates.
