Fahaka Puffer Fish (Tetraodon lineatus)
The Fahaka Puffer Fish is a large, highly intelligent freshwater puffer known for its bold personality, striking pattern, and impressive size. Native to the Nile River basin and other freshwater systems of Africa, Tetraodon lineatus is a true freshwater puffer and does not require brackish or saltwater conditions. Their diet should regularly include hard-shelled foods such as snails, clams, mussels, and other appropriate mollusks to help naturally wear down their teeth. Shrimp, krill, earthworms, and other meaty foods can also be offered as part of a varied diet.
This species is extremely territorial and aggressive. Fahaka Puffers are capable of seriously injuring or killing tank mates, even fish they previously appeared to tolerate. For this reason, they are best maintained alone in a species-only aquarium. Keeping them individually also allows the aquarist to provide enrichment and interact more safely with this highly intelligent fish.
As adults, Fahaka Puffers become large, powerful fish and produce substantial waste due to their protein-rich diet. Strong filtration, regular water changes, and consistently excellent water quality are essential for long-term health.
