Diamond Sleeper Goby (Valenciennea puellaris)
The Diamond Sleeper Goby is a fascinating and hardworking saltwater fish prized for its beautiful white body covered in brilliant orange diamond-shaped markings. Also known as the Orange Diamond Goby or Maiden Goby, this peaceful species is especially popular for its constant sand-sifting behavior. By taking mouthfuls of substrate and filtering it through its gills, the Diamond Sleeper Goby helps keep the surface of the sand bed clean and naturally aerated.
Native to sandy lagoons and reef environments throughout the Indo-Pacific, Valenciennea puellaris spends much of its time near the bottom searching the substrate for tiny crustaceans, worms, and other edible organisms. In the aquarium, it requires a mature sand bed with plenty of open substrate for foraging along with live rock, caves, and sheltered areas where it can establish a burrow.
Diamond Sleeper Gobies are carnivorous and should not be expected to survive solely on organisms found within the sand. They should receive regular feedings of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, frozen marine preparations, and quality sinking pellets. Well-fed specimens can become active and entertaining members of the aquarium.
This species is generally peaceful and can be kept with a wide variety of non-aggressive marine fish. It does not normally harm corals or desirable reef invertebrates, making it an excellent choice for established reef aquariums. However, its enthusiastic sand-sifting can occasionally deposit sand onto corals positioned near the substrate.
A tightly fitted aquarium lid is essential. Diamond Sleeper Gobies are excellent jumpers, particularly when newly introduced or startled, and can escape through surprisingly small openings.
