The Blue Throat Sailfin Wrasse is a striking and highly active saltwater fish known for its bold markings, constantly changing appearance, and energetic personality. Also commonly known as the Rockmover Wrasse or Dragon Wrasse, juveniles and adults look dramatically different. Juveniles have elongated dorsal and pelvic fins that create a distinctive sail-like appearance, while mature fish develop a heavier body with contrasting dark and light markings.

Native to tropical waters throughout the Indo-Pacific, Novaculichthys taeniourus is typically associated with reefs, rocky areas, and sandy habitats. In the aquarium, it requires plenty of open swimming space along with rockwork for exploration and a deep bed of fine sand. This species naturally buries itself in the substrate when frightened and when resting at night, making an appropriate sand bed an important part of its aquarium environment.

The Blue Throat Sailfin Wrasse is a carnivore that should receive a varied diet of high-quality marine foods. Mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, squid, and other meaty preparations are excellent choices. Juveniles should be fed appropriately sized foods several times per day, while established adults can be maintained on a varied feeding schedule.

This wrasse is known for actively moving rocks, shells, rubble, and other objects while searching for crustaceans and other prey. Rockwork should therefore be securely positioned so it cannot be undermined or toppled. As the fish matures, it can become increasingly territorial and may prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other mobile invertebrates.

Because of its eventual size, active behavior, and tendency to rearrange aquarium décor, the Blue Throat Sailfin Wrasse is best suited for experienced marine aquarists with a large aquarium. A secure lid is essential because wrasses are capable jumpers.
