Betta Splendens

One of the most well known freshwater fish in the hobby, Betta Splendens are a beautiful but fiercely territorial species. Natural Environment Aquatix takes pride in hand-selecting the most attractive and unique specimens that we can find.

The Betta also known as The Siamese Fighting Fish is a member of the Gourami Family and are native to the Mekong basin of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. These fish can be readily found in the standing waters of canals, rice paddies, and floodplains. On 5 February 2019, Thailand’s council of ministers announced the “Siamese Fighting Fish” as Thailand’s National Aquatic Animal.

The IUCN has classified B. splendens into the vulnerable category. The primary threat is due to habitat destruction and pollution, as farmlands continue to be developed across central Thailand.

Best known for their vivid colors and trailing fins there are numerous varieties available to the hobbyist and new varieties are constantly being developed in captivity. Some Betta enthusiasts assert that there is a minimum tank size for Betta’s but contrary to this belief there is no evidence that Bettas require a lot of space. However, it is recommended that they have enough space to turn around. We recommend at least 1.5 gallons. Water quality should be pristine and kept at an acceptable temperature of around 70-78 degrees Fahrenheit.

Males should not ever be kept together. Males and females should only be kept together for a short period of time (for breeding) and only under strict supervision. Even female Betta’s can become aggressive, especially if kept in a small tank together.

Bettas do well with bottom-feeding fish and other slow-moving freshwater varieties that will not nip at their fins or destroy their slime coat. But Bettas can live out their lives peacefully and healthfully all alone.
